Coloring the Varnish

To ready-made varnishes, different types of colorants are added. Alongside soluble dyes, makers often use finely ground, insoluble pigments.

The choice of these colorants — together with the skillful application of the varnish in many thin layers — determines the final appearance of the instrument: its color, its transparency, and the lasting brilliance of its surface.
