Vidoudez, Alfred und Pierre

Atelier Vidoudez
«Le Salon de Lutherie», La Coraterie Genève, 1904

After an apprenticeship in a Geneva music house, Alfred Vidoudez learned his trade with Gustave Bazen in Mirecourt (FRA). After years of travelling in Brussels (with Georges Mougenot) and Paris (with Léon Bernardel), he opened his own studio in Geneva in 1904.

As early as 1910, he was appointed ‘luthier du conservatoire’. In his own work, Alfred Vidoudez was very attached to the French building style.

After Alfred’s death in 1943, his son Pierre took over the business. Unlike his father, Pierre learned his trade in Markneukirchen in the Vogtland region.
Interestingly, his years of travel in Lyon (with Boulangeot) and Paris (with Caressa) also acquainted him with French violin making and, in particular, bow making. His shop was among the most prominent workshops in Switzerland. Renowned bow makers such as Bernard Ouchard of France also worked there.

After the death of Pierre Vidoudez in 1994, the atelier was purchased by the Hug & Co. music house.
