Between 1613 and 1776, the first ‘Collegia Musica’ were founded in the Reformed cities. These were groups of amateur musicians who cultivated classical music culture in smaller ensembles. They formed the foundation of the country’s slowly blossoming musical culture. (Today’s Musikkollegium Winterthur, the city’s professional symphony orchestra, emerged from one of these ‘Collegia).
