As early as the 19th century, the trade in old stringed musical instruments in Switzerland profited from growing demand. Musik Hug Zurich (a music shop), founded in 1807, was quick to advertise its selection of vintage violins.
The Bernese violin maker G. Methfessel (1839-1910) returned from his regular trips to Italy with vintage violins for trade. In the 20th century, violin makers such as Henry Werro, Pierre Gerber, Fritz Baumgartner and Alfred Vidoudez made an international name for themselves as dealers and experts. Their clientèle often included famous soloists of the time.
