IR spectroscopy is an analytical method that is based on exposure to infrared light and spectroscopic measurement of energy states in molecules. It allows for qualitative assessments about partial structures of molecules to be made. IR spectroscopy is also used for quantitative assessments of substances and substance mixtures whose components are unknown. In addition, IR spectroscopy is used to investigate structures and identify unknown substances.
Finally, IR spectroscopy can also provide valuable information when examining old varnish layers on stringed instruments.
